Canadian productivity is a lot like Canadian weather. Everyone talks about it. No one does much about it.

Jim Milway, Executive Director, Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity, recently pointed out Ontario's productivity is substantially less than 14 peer states in the US and one of the key reasons is that Canadian managers are less well educated than their American counterparts, and less likely to invest in innovation.

ICT leaders bear some responsibility for their dilemma. For decades some have calmly accepted the notion that their efforts are chronically misaligned with corporate goals, expensive, non-core and good candidates for outsourcing.

This picture must be changed. ICT leaders need to carve out a position of vision and trust in the Canadian corporate landscape in order to attract and retain tomorrow's innovators. I've worked with dozens of bright, articulate Canadian ICT professionals in the US. Lets keep them here.

If we got out the message that if we do not deal with the productivity issue it's means $ 30,000 dollares to every Canadian we would have there attention . We have to keep the message simple . We now have a simple measure of what the negative outcome will be . How do we message on " how to get there " ?

Lynda - I could not agree more. It was incredible listening to speaker after speaker approach the conference and outline the significance and importance of the digital economy and echo the call to action to focus and invest here as an area of national competitive advantage. Very eager to see the actions that come out of the event and further discussion about our national digital agenda!
